10 Governmenets

US Government
The government of the United States is a constitutional republic in which officials are elected by the people and are sworn to abide by the Constitution. The US government is divided into three governing bodies. The legislative, executive, and judicial branches. This division of branches and a system of checks and balances ensures no one person or group of people becomes too powerful. The foundation of the government of the US as a democracy was in direct opposition to the monarchy that it was created during. The Founding Fathers of the US disagreed with the English monarchy imposed upon the American colonies. They decided the US would not make the same mistakes as the English monarchy. Although the US is a perfect example of a functioning democracy in the realm of countries the US is still relatively young, only a little over 200 years old. It should be noted that many empires have lasted far longer than the US so the idea that democracy is the key to lasting long is still to be proven.

Chinese Government
The Chinese Government, or the Government of the People’s Republic of China is a communist government. Power is divided amongst the People’s Liberation Army, the Communist Part of China and the Central People’s government. Although China and America have never been in a war when both their allies where fighting in what is now North and South Korea both sides killed each others troops. With the war in Korea over China has now become one of Americas most important allies, China owning over 1.16 trillion dollars of America’s 14 trillion plus dollar deficit. In the past communist countries have not fared well, this being due to the fact that all of the power of a country is in one persons hands. The responsibility is to much for one person to handle without becoming corrupt. China has lasted this long because it has slowly evolved and embraced more democratic ideals, ⅓ of China’s economy is in the private sector, which is an indication of the Chinese government stepping back and letting transactions take place without direct interaction. If history continues to repeat itself than China’s government will eventually crumble.

10 Food Pieces

French fries were originally created in Belgian during the 17th century. Once invented French fries became extremely popular in France, particularly Paris. French fries, otherwise known as chips, are thin strips of deep-fried potatoes. First the potatoes are skinned. Then the potatoes are cut in to strips and deep fried. French fries are often salted and mixed with vinegar to add flavor.

Science Museum

In the Science Museum there where many hands on exhibits. The first exhibit is Air Rings. You press a pump that sends air through water making rings that float to the top. Water pressure increases with depth so the pressure on the bottom of a bubble is greater than that on top. Bubbles become rings when higher pressured water from below breaks through the center of the air bubble.

The next exhibit I visited was Vortex. Funnel shaped forms in both liquid and gases. Greater water pressure from the outside of the vortex causes higher speeds. In this exhibit you saw a tornado spinning.

Confused sea is the next exhibit in the Museum. A fan blows water in a bowl and the water becomes wild and storm-like. As the fan blows air over the watter small ripples form. These ripples merge together to form a larger, more powerful wave.
Parabolas and paraboloids show up in all sorts of places. This was shown in the water spinner experiment, where the centripetal force creates a parabola out of the water in a spinning container. An interesting fact I learned was that the paraboloid shaped ears of animals help them trap sound and hear better.
In Turbulent orb I learned that the slow circular pattern of fluid motion is called laminar flow and that the fast movement of the fluid is called turbulent flow. The experiment was an orb filled with a red substance. As you spun the orb the material in the sphere started spinning and when you stopped spinning the sphere the material kept spinning.

Museum of Man

The Australopithecus Afarensis is the first hominid species for which they have a large sample of fossils. This australopithecine had many ape like features, it walked on two legs and had a hairy coat. Scientists know that it walked on two legs by the position of the foamen magnum which is where the spine connects to the skull and the pelvis, knee, and thigh bones.

DNA is your personal code. No two people have the exact same DNA. Every cell in the body has thousands of messages in a code, which is called the Genetic Code. An interesting fact is that we have the 50% the same DNA of bananas.
Over 60,000 years ago the Neandertal, a human ancestor, buried their dead. They also made spoken sounds the way modern humans do. By these facts it leads scientists to believe that they where becoming close to the modern human by this time.

There was a room on possible future nano technology. Nano robots which are essentially tiny machines that fix any problem your body can have. They would enter the body through either pills or shots.

The last exhibit was the Morotapithecus Bishopi which lived when apes were evolving into a wide variety of species and were more common than monkeys. They are believed to be human ancestors by some scientists.

Railroad Museum

The railroad flaunted its southwestern flavor in its decor. The railroad museum in Balboa Park had a strange feeling to it. Located in a basement with only a few people in it there was a hidden feeling to the Museum. As you walk in through the iron gates into the Museum you see intricate railroad models. The detail of them becomes apparent when you walk up to one and see that every person and building obviously has hours of time and effort put into it.

The first exhibit has a train station and a western style to it. There is a construction zone and rural area. Two trains run around the track, which is about the size of a small room.

With World War I in Europe in 1914 women started working in more labor intensive jobs such as the railroad. By the end of the war the railroad employed 101,785 women in 99 different occupations.

There was a railroad in the next room that was amazing. It spanned the entire room, with every single part of it holding immense detail. There where 4 trains running the track with each one probably 4 to 5 feet long.

As railroads where being used more and more for transportation of goods and people the robbery of them became more common. The wild bunch, Jessie James and others made their living robbing trains and taking their goods.

10 Local Current Events

High Tech Murders

On may 24Th High Tech High student Priscilla Pimienta, 17, and her family where found dead in their backyard swimming pool. Priscilla’s mom, Georgina was found dead in the bathtub inside the house. It is believed her parents drowned the two daughters and then killed themselves. She was going to graduate from High Tech High on June 25th. Priscilla was going to major in biology at Sonoma State University. This makes me appreciate life more than I have before.

Boater Dead by Shelter Island.

Micheal Hill fell into the water and ultimately to his death on May 24Th near Shelter Island. He fell off the dinghy he was riding in with his girlfriend. The Harbor Police officers said it was unclear on what caused Micheal to fall off the boat. Hill and his girlfriend where returning from a restaurant to their 50 foot yacht where Hill lived. The police said he was wearing a life jaket when he fell in the water but it appears he received head trauma before he hit the water, possibly from the engine however foul play has not been ruled out completely. While this does not effect me directly I feel that it is very suspicious that she could not pull him out of the water before he drowned.

San Diego Family Murdered

41 year old Mary Alvarez and her children where murdered by her ex-boyfriend Alfredo Almonte. The family was chocked and beaten to death by Alfredo who then committed suicide by jumping off a Spring Valley bridge. Police said that the multiple homicide-suicide was a result of their relationship taking a turn for the worse. Police said Mary was trying to break up with Alfredo or either had, which caused him to become angry. With the High Tech murders and now this family murdered over something as simple as relationship problems it puts the San Diego youth, including myself, in a sense of unease. This is especially true with murderers being willing to kill children and teens.

Skaters Showing Off Skills

San Diego skaters got an opportunity to show off their skills on June 4Th at a skateboard competition in Paradise Hills. Both Professional and amateur skaters showed up to the event, which went from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event was free and was sponsored by Off the Streets Productions, police departments and the city’s Recreation and Park services. The event called “Skate With the Pros” was held on Potamac Street to teach kids about safety and promote healthy habits. Being an ex-skateboarder I can understand the importance of events like these. Skaters frequently do not wear helmets, which protect from serious head injuries.

Infant Airlifted to Hospital

On June 4Th a two year old toddler was airlifted to Rady Children’s Hospital after the victim fell into a pond around 3:30. The toddler’s older sister called the police after she could not find her younger sibling. Firefighters and officers arrived shortly after receiving the call. They found the child behind a house where they immediately airlifted him to the hospital. Educational programs are there to teach your baby to swim so in the event of the toddler falling in the water he or she is capable of staying afloat and living. I have experienced death in my immediate family before and I can just begin to imagine what the family members must be feeling.

Teen Stabbed In San Ysidro

A 16 year old boy was stabbed while participating in a party on June 5th in San Ysidro. Shortly after being stabbed he showed up at Scripps Chula Vista Hospital with a stab wound, where he was then taken to UCSD Medical Center for surgery. Kids from LA showed up and a fight started which lead to the teen being stabbed in the chest. The boy said when he tried to stop the fight he was stabbed, then he was driven to the hospital by a friend. There where no arrests made. With fights breaking out at parties and the escalation to where a teen was stabbed makes me feel unsafe and vulnerable at social events.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon

June 5th was the largest Rock and Roll Marathon in its history. With over 31,000 people showing up from not only across the country but across the world coming to raise money and have fun. Beginning at Balboa Park and ending at Sea World the 26.2 mile run helped raise money for the Leukemia and the Lymphoma Society. Thousands showed up to watch and have a good time. The runners dressed up in costumes from superman to the original Elvis getup. Started 14 years ago the event was created to raise money for charity, now cities across America have their own Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathons. Having never been around someone with Leukemia I can only speculate on the how it effects the family. This event does however bring public awareness and provides a sense of gratefulness just to be alive.

Seals Barrier To Come Down

A San Diego Judge decided the rope at Children’s Pool can come down.Seals are known to leave their pups when they become scared. The rope was there to prevent people from scaring the seals while they where at the beach with their pups. With the pups old enough to leave the beach the city is arguing the rope isn't needed while animal rights activists want the area to be a permanent haven for the seals. The case is going to San Diego County Superior Court on July 15, where the judge said the Animal Protection and Rescue League, which is the party suing the city, has a daunting task if they plan on winning the trail.

Man Arrested In El Cajon

On June 5th officers received a call at 4pm regarding a man threatening to kill his father. What followed was a four hour standoff between police and a 31 year old man. The man and his father got into a heated argument that escalated and eventually ended with SWAT members trying to coax the man out of the house. After the man surrendered the officers found over 27 marijuana plants in two rooms. The man is set to go to trial later next month.

Padres Win Three In A Row

The padres won three in a row for the first time this season. They won their third straight behind the play of the 20 year old Jordan Lyles. After struggling last year finishing in the bottom five in hitting they appear to have worked out their kinks in the off season. This season has padres fans excited with the future looking up. With a team to rally behind it shows the citizens of San Diego that change can happen, and the results will appear.

10 Global Current Events

Lakers Move To Western Semi-Finals.

The Lakers beat the New Orleans Hornets this Thursday in a 4-2 series. The Lakers won handily by 18 points, Kobe was the leading scorer with 24 points. After winning back to back world championships it appears the Lakers are headed to another title. Their head coach, Phil Jackson has won 11 of the past 20 championships with 3 three-peats. He hopes to extend that streak this June. The Lakers will face the Dallas Mavericks in the western semi-finals. Myself being a Lakers fan always like to see my team to do well.

Death Of Osama Bin Laden

Osama Bin Laden was killed today by US navy seals. President Obama called this the “most significant achievement to date” in the effort towards defeating al Queda. Osama, believed to be the mastermind of the 2001 attacks on America, has finally been brought to justice after being in hiding for over 10 years. While I am glad that Osama has been caught the risk of terrorism is still there and terrorists must be tirelessly chased.

NATO Attacks Tripoli

The largest of the recent attacks from NATO on Tripoli happened today. With at least 18 rockets hitting the capital of Libya. These attacks sparked an immediate response from President Obama who said, “"Gadhafi has lost legitimacy to rule. He cannot regain control of Libya. And he must step down immediately." At least 3 where killed with over 150 wounded. The attacks will likely continue until Gadhafi is out of power.

Unrest Reaches Israel

The growing number of Arabs rebelling has spread to Israel. A large group numbering the thousands tried to cross the states border with Syria, Gaza and Lebanon. 15 were murdered as Israeli solders shot the protesters, dozens more where injured. The demonstrators hope to convince the UN to create a Palestinian state before 2012. The UN should take a serious look at their request, however if it does not benefit the majority of the people than they should maintain the policies and political boundaries already in place.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Unknown Child

Arnold Schwarzenegger publicly admitted to having a son with a member of his household staff. He said he had an affair prior to his first term as governor in 2003. The child is now 14 and many speculate this to be the reason of his recent separation with his wife. Arnold hopes to revisit his acting career and signed contracts to three new films, two of which are part of the Terminator series. With Arnold being the ex-governor of California this does not set a good example of how our country presents our self to the rest of the world.

Mississippi River Flooding

Over three million acres of farmland has been flooded by the Mississippi River. Damages have been estimated at 9 billion from Memphis to the Gulf of Mexico. The Mississippi normally floods but this year it is unusually high. Records are being broken across flooded area. Experts attribute the high flooding to the large amount of rain this area has been and is receiving. While the immediate effects of the flooding will misplace thousands in the long term the flooding will provide the soil with nutrients, perfect for the large percentage of farmers in the area.

Nuclear Power Plant Worse Than Originally Thought

The nuclear power plant at Fukushima is worse than TEPCO officials originally thought said The Week magazine. The company announced this week that three of the reactors experienced at least a partial meltdown however they still plan to have the reactor stable by January. This has caused the majority of the public to view nuclear power in a negative way. Japan was on its way to have 50% of their power provided from nuclear power plants, it now plans to look into other sources. With this negative reputation the benefits of nuclear power to help fix our dependence on fossil fuels will be overlooked because of this one-in-a-million event.

US Begins Negotiation To Stop War In Iraq

A US official began meeting with a Taliban leader to stop the ongoing war in Afghanistan. Negotiation talks with the Taliban have been held in Qatar and Germany. The US and Afghan governments are requiring the Taliban respect the rights of minorities and women while renouncing violence. While peace talks with the Taliban may work, it leaves room for wondering if they shall uphold their end of the agreement, they are in fact a terrorist group. If they do break the agreement than US intervention will likely be needed.

Planking Taking Australia By Storm

Planking is where someone takes a picture of themselves laying down. This have become increasingly popular in Australia where their Facebook planking page has almost 200,000 followers. However while this may seem like a harmless activity some participants are pushing it to dangerous limits. A planker named Acton Beale was killed after he fell 7 stories to his death while trying to lay on a balcony rail. While planking can be a source of entertainment Prime Minister Julia Gillard urges Australians to not take it to such extreme measures. Planking may not effect the US immediately although if planking continues its trend into popularity the number of deaths will grow linearly with it, causing it to become a dangerous activity.

British Polluting The Oceans

The British created a refueling station off the coast of Spain to take advantage of the heavy boat traffic that passes through the area. 10% of the worlds shipping, or 100,000 ships, refuels there. Because of no fueling regulations by either Spain or England every time a boat is refueled some of the oil leaks into the surrounding waters, which as a result has caused the volume of fuel in the bay over the past 10 years to increase by five fold. If not regulated the waters in not only the surrounding waters but the water on the east coast of America will become polluted, killing fish and other undersea life, while possibly costing billions.
